Sensex tumbles to a low of 19,513, down 738 points

Mirroring the weak trend in global markets, the Sensex opened with a huge negative gap of 171 points at 20,080. Unabated selling saw the index drift deeper into red as the day progressed. The index tumbled to a low of 19,513 - down 738 points from the previous close - in late noon deals. The NSE Nifty ended at 5,950, down 124 points.Aggressive buying at lower levels saw the index stage a significant recovery, and finally settle with a loss of 383 points at 19,868.The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,840 stocks traded, 2,208 declined, 614 advanced and 18 were unchanged on Wednesday.INDEX SHAKERS...HDFC Bank [Get Quote] and Reliance Communications [Get Quote] tumbled 6% each to Rs 1,576 and Rs 732, respectively.NTPC slumped 5.5% to Rs 259, and BHEL plunged 4.5% to Rs 2,309.Reliance Energy [Get Quote], DLF and Tata Steel [Get Quote] dropped around 4% each to Rs 2,267, Rs 1,128 and Rs 819, respectively.ITC and Hindalco [Get Quote] shed 3.4% each to Rs 209 and Rs 191, respectively.Ranbaxy [Get Quote], Maruti [Get Quote] and Tata Motors [Get Quote] slipped nearly 3% each to Rs 379, Rs 844 and Rs 749, respectively.Reliance and ACC declined 2% each to Rs 3,098 and Rs 856, respectively.
