Trading Basics

Basic Steps in How Stock Trading Works

Trading stocks. You hear that phrase all the time, although it really is wrong – you don’t trade stocks like baseball cards (I’ll trade you 100 IBMs for 100 Intels).

Trade = Buy or Sell

To “trade” means to buy and sell in the jargon of the financial markets. How a system that can accommodate one billion shares trading in a single day works is a mystery to most people. No doubt, our financial markets are marvels of technological efficiency.

Yet, they still must handle your order for 100 shares of Acme Kumquats with the same care and documentation as my order of 100,000 shares of MegaCorp.
You don’t need to know all of the technical details of how you buy and sell stocks, however it is important to have a basic understanding of how the markets work. If you want to dig deeper, there are links to articles explaining the technical side of the markets

Two Basic Methods
There are two basic ways exchanges execute a trade:
  • On the exchange floor
  • Electronically

There is a strong push to move more trading to the networks and off the trading floors, however this push is meeting with some resistance. Most markets, most notably the NASDAQ, trade stocks electronically. The futures’ markets trade in person on the floor of several exchanges, but that’s a different topic.

Exchange floor :
Trading on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (the NYSE) is the image most people have thanks to television and the movies of how the market works. When the market is open, you see hundreds of people rushing about shouting and gesturing to one another, talking on phones, watching monitors, and entering data into terminals. It could not look any more chaotic.

Yet, at the end of the day, the markets workout all the trades and get ready for the next day. Here is a step-by-step walk through the execution of a simple trade on the NYSE.

1. You tell your broker to buy 100 shares of Acme Kumquats at market.
2. Your broker’s order department sends the order to their floor clerk on the exchange.
3. The floor clerk alerts one of the firm’s floor traders who finds another floor trader willing to sell 100 shares of Acme Kumquats. This is easier than is sounds, because the floor trader knows which floor traders make markets in particular stocks.
4. The two agree on a price and complete the deal. The notification process goes back up the line and your broker calls you back with the final price. The process may take a few minutes or longer depending on the stock and the market. A few days later, you will receive the confirmation notice in the mail.
Of course, this example was a simple trade, complex trades and large blocks of stocks involve considerable more detail

Electronically
In this fast moving world, some are wondering how long a human-based system like the NYSE can continue to provide the level of service necessary. The NYSE handles a small percentage of its volume electronically, while the rival NASDAQ is completely electronic.

The electronic markets use vast computer networks to match buyers and sellers, rather than human brokers. While this system lacks the romantic and exciting images of the NYSE floor, it is efficient and fast. Many large institutional traders, such as pension funds, mutual funds, and so forth, prefer this method of trading.

For the individual investor, you frequently can get almost instant confirmations on your trades, if that is important to you. It also facilitates further control of online investing by putting you one step closer to the market.

You still need a broker to handle your trades – individuals don’t have access to the electronic markets. Your broker accesses the exchange network and the system finds a buyer or seller depending on your order.

Conclusion :
What does this all mean to you? If the system works, and it does most of the time, all of this will be hidden from you, however if something goes wrong it’s important to have an idea of what’s going on behind the scenes

PRE MARKET REPORT - 17.01.2008

TCS beats the street, bulls retreat The fall on the BSE was sharp and vicous enough for the investors to panic. BSE at one point lost nearly 800 points before bouncing back in the last one hour. Global markets were reeling under severe selling pressure and the scenario reminds of the last global fall in 2007 Feb when chinese govt. hiked interest rates injecting a global panic. The key difference is the bounce is equally sharp last time and this time there appears to be no reason to bounce. TCS beats the street with exemplory results with a 19% jump in the net profit. The company is more focussed on emerging economies and reducing the exposure to US. Growth in operating margins of IT biggies is definitely worth noting with TCS contuining the trend intiated by Infosys, offsetting the strong Rupee.US Markets could not sustain at higher levels and continued to drift down. Indian Markets are likely to consolidate today and Midcaps are showing signs of resistance. Reliance Power and Future Capital IPO continued to take the sheen away from the secondary markets with huge interest from retail investors oversubscribing the issues 13 and 132 times respectively. We are not cautious on Indian Markets at these levels except for volatility. We believe markets are likely to move up after a decent consolidation. But major up moves cannot be expected with global turmoil buzz doing rounds. Patience pays and this time it will be big. MARKET OUTLOOK

After days of weakness, bulls will hope today is better. Predictions are thatReliance will beat expectations with RIL's bottomline expected to cross the $1bnmark. It may report Rs40bn gains from the sale of 4% stake in RPL. We see a muchimproved opening today. The markets will remain choppy during the day. USmarkets shed their gains and ended lower, and Asian markets, which gained around1-1.5% earlier, are again in the red. We advocated leaving the indices alone forsome time. Knowledge is power (we are not talking about Reliance Power) and thiscorrection should give you an opportunity to use knowledge to get intofundamentally strong counters, which are available at better rates.

Anil Ambani to pip Mukesh as richest Indian?

Anil Ambani group's Reliance Power IPO on Tuesday generated a demand of close to Rs 1 lakh crore (Rs 1 trillion) within four hours of start of the book building process, with the issue getting oversubscribed nearly 10 times.
Reliance Power is part of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, which has interests in telecommunications, finance, energy and entertainment. This is the first time that Anil Ambani has tapped the markets ever since he and elder brother Mukesh spilt up the Reliance empire after a very public spat.
Mukesh Ambani is currently India's richest man. However, some people say that with the listing of Reliance Power, Anil Ambani might well pip his brother to the post to become India's -- and perhaps the world's -- richest human being.
According to one calculation, Reliance Power IPO is likely to gain close to $27 billion for Anil Ambani, which when combined with the existing market capitalisation of his companies will work out to be close to $75 billion!
The market cap of companies held by Mukesh Ambani is at a slightly more $76 billion.
Anil Ambani may soon pip Mukesh to be the world's richest man
Reliance Power IPO to gain close to $27 billion for the younger Ambani

Petrol set to cost Rs 4 per litre more

Petrol set to cost Rs 4 per litre more

The government is likely to hike prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 4 and Rs 2 per litre, respectively, as global crude oil prices continued to surge, hitting the revenues of domestic oil marketing companies.
An announcement to this effect is likely to be made by the government very soon.
Giving a tacit go-ahead for a fuel price hike, the ruling Congress last evening had said that all steps would be taken to minimise the impact on the common man.
"The Congress party wish to put on record its hopes that the government will take all steps to minimise and soften, to the maximum degree possible, any impact of the global rise in oil prices," AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, in a virtual endorsement of the hike proposal.
Singhvi said the government should take all reasonable steps within the larger macro economic perspective. "Any decision on the issue should be based on overall national perspective," he said.
He said the entire hike in the international prices of oil should not be passed on to the consumer.
Earlier in the month Petroleum Minister Murli Deora had said hiking retail prices of oil is not the only solution to combat the rising prices of crude oil and the government was also considering duty cut to deal with the situation.
"We have to find the best solution and we are considering duty cuts to deal with the situation," Deora said.
Mr Deora said the government has been in touch with all parties on the issue and the Left parties were ready to co-operate with it to find a solution to the problem of surging oil prices.
Petroleum Secretary M S Srinivasan had said prices of petrol and diesel are expected to go up by Rs 4 and Rs 2 per litre, respectively.
The government had last increased petrol and diesel prices on June 6, 2006.
With the crude oil prices touching an all-time high, the government was reluctant to increase the fuel prices because of the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
Petroleum Minister Murli Deora earlier met Finance Minister P Chidambaram to discuss measures to cope with the record crude oil prices, as the country imports over two-thirds of its oil.
The three government-owned OMCs such as Indian Oil [Get Quote], Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are projected to lose Rs 69,753 crore (Rs 697.53 billion) on sale of petrol, diesel, LPG and PDS kerosene as the government has not allowed them to raise prices in line with the price of imported crude.
Petrol is being sold at a loss of Rs 8.74 a litre, diesel at Rs 9.92 per litre, kerosene Rs 20.53 a litre and LPG at a loss of Rs 256.35 per cylinder.

Ambani Brothers

The two Ambani brothers can buy 100 percent of every company listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) and would still be left with $30 billion to spare. The four richest Indians can buy up all goods and services produced over a year by 169 million Pakistanis and still be left with $60 billion to spare. The four richest Indians are now richer than the forty richest Chinese.

PRE MARKET REPORT - 16.01.2008

Subject: Pre - Market Report - 16.01.2008
All headers

Markets at crossroads Indian markets reacted a day early to the citigroup news(job cuts/negative quarter and a huge write down) which hit the US markets today along with the dripping consumer confidence as per the latest data. We mentioned the other day that Dow Jones has broken critical resistance and 600-800 point dip is on cards. We see the next support levels at 12,150 below which there might be panic across the globe. We do not see that level broken easily. US Federal bank is in tight spot now with chances of US recession(as per many analysts and media hyping the recession) to cut the interest rates by atleast 50 basis points. Our take on recession is pegged at 60-40 in favour of "No Recession". Mad money pushed Reliance Power IPo craze to new levels with a 11 times over subscription and still going strong. ICICI Bank , reports a pink paper is trying to rope in a strategic investor for IVEN Medicare, fully owned subsidary of ICICI ventures.Indian Markets are at cross roads right now technically. A close below 20,200 for sensex will target 19,475 levels and then 18,600. We are not too bearish about the indian markets at this point. Vakrangee software reported excellent numbers and the stock reacted nicely. No matter we have a momentum call there. Have a great trading day. Based on the progress so far, the company is on course to complete the project ahead of its initial schedule of December 2008.During the quarter, project implementation gained further momentum and led to achievement of several significant milestones, including the following:- Engineering activities are nearing completion. - Overall procurement progress exceeded 97%.- More than 75% of equipments and tagged items already received at site.- Deliveries of over dimensional cargos (ODC) and super ODCs are nearing completion.- Over 40% of equipments have been erected; Project skyline changed dramatically.- Overall construction progress crossed the 60% mark for the complex.- Structural and pipe fabrication activities progressing at an accelerated pace.- Sufficient site infrastructure mobilised to sustain equipment installation and fabrication activities on the fast track.During the quarter, the project engineering activities were completed with all drawings for concreting, structural steel, underground piping as well as electrical and instrumentation released for construction. Residual engineering activities to support ongoing construction are continuing. Successful completion of this massive engineering effort in less than two years has set a new global record in the refining sector: It also reflects the success of a team effort that involved over 7,500 engineers, working from several interconnected locations across the world. The quarter witnessed near completion of procurement activities for the project as well. The procurement and contracting for equipments, tagged items and bulk materials is now complete. Equipment deliveries have gained enhanced momentum with over 3,800 equipments, including several ODCs and super heavy equipments, delivered at site already.Nearly all the bulk materials, including pipes and fittings as well as substantial part of electrical and instrumentation bulks have also been received at site. Thrust on vendor follow- up for the balance equipments is continuing. Simultaneously, focus is shifting towards procurement close-out during the coming quarter. The progress on the construction front has been equally impressive. The civil construction activity is nearly complete. Over 2,400 equipments, including several super heavy equipments, have already been installed at site. The underground piping works are mostly complete. Nearly 80% of structural steel fabrication, 95% of tankage fabrication and over 73% of pipe fabrication is completed. The construction activities are at peak and sufficient site infrastructure is mobilised to sustain construction on fast track in the coming quarters. Simultaneously, start-up planning and operations preparedness activities have gained momentum to support the commissioning of the refinery ahead of schedule. At the industry level, global refining fundamentals remain intact and promise exciting value creation opportunities for large and complex refiners. Despite high and volatile crude prices, the global demand trends have been positive and are expected to remain firm on the back of robust outlook for transportation fuels. With stringent product specifications adding pressure on an already stretched refining system and continuing delays in new capacities, refining margins are expected to stay robust. Complex refiners will gain further from wide light-heavy differentials. In this context, the RPL (Q, N,C,F)* project that is designed around large scale, higher complexity, lower capital costs and faster schedule, would have a significant competitive advantage in the markets.Commenting on the project progress, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of the company said, ``I am pleased with the rapid pace of RPL project implementation and the team is now fully geared to sustain the construction on fast track even in the coming quarters. We are well on the way to create history by successfully completing the refinery ahead of its initial schedule. RPL is poised to benefit from emerging opportunities in the sector and create superior value for its shareholders.``Shares of the company declined Rs 5.55, or 2.46%, to settle at Rs 219.7. The total volume of shares traded was 8,587,288 at the BSE.(Tuesday)
Global traders taken for a roller coaster ride

US Markets exactly did what BSE Sensex was trying to do yesterday, but with a positive close. A Goldman Sach report confirms a US recession in the FY 2008. What is a recession? A country is said to be in recession if the last two quarters of a year witnesses negative real economic growth or a decline in GDP(gross domestic product). But US defines a recession as "a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months" . Signs of recession : Increase in UnemployementDecrease in new investmentsDipping corporate profitsEither steep fall in prices or sharp rise of pricesWhere does US Stand in terms of RecessionAs one famous economist said "Recession can only be identified after 6 months to 1 year into the recession". The recent big jump in unemployment data in the US raised a concern among the die hard supporters of a flamboyant economy.Increase in Unemployement in december quarter is an indicator towards recession. We do not see a decrease in new investments despite of corporate profit slow down. There are no signs of any deflation or inflation at this point of time. While housing is the weak link Tech companies look promising as ever.Taking a leaf from the US markets Indian markets are likely to move up further and 21k is definitely possible. Tech stocks are looking solid and the Q3 numbers from IT companies IGATE and Mastek came out strong. We expect the IT pack to outperform the market with the second rung taking the lead. Midcaps will continue to reel underpressure for some more time thanks to the earlier Euphoria many stocks are trading way above the fundamentals. Large caps will tested for performance though intial results from companies like Axis bank looks good. We believe Large cap valuations are at par and major moves are only in case of positive surprises but liquidity is likely to drive markets crazy soon. Watch for another round of feast from midcaps in the next 10 days.
