Asian stocks slipped on Friday with a fall in crude oil prices dampening investor risk sentiment, while the dollar hovered near a seven-month high against an index of peers. The dollar was boosted by a fall in the euro after the European Central Bank shot down talk it was contemplating tapering its monetary easing - sending the euro lower. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.2 percent.South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4 percent and Australian stocks shed 0.3 percent. Japan's Nikkei bucked the trend and rose 0.2 percent , brushing a six-month high, as the yen weakened against the dollar. US stocks ended a choppy session on Thursday slightly lower as investors digested the latest round of earnings, with a sharp drop in telecoms offset by gains in healthcare. The ECB left its ultra-loose monetary policy unchanged on Thursday but kept the door open to more stimulus in December, with ECB President Mario Draghi dousing recent market speculation that the central bank may begin tapering its 1.7 trillion euro asset-buying programme. "The European Central Bank removed a source of immediate risk for traders by revealing that it did not discuss tapering its QE program at this month's meeting," wrote Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets. "Decisions are being deferred until December pending the outcome of research - meaning that meeting will be a key focus for markets." The dollar index was steady at 98.318, not far from 98.404, its highest since March scaled overnight. The euro was little changed at USD 1.0926, within reach of a four-month trough of USD 1.0916 struck on Thursday on ECB President Draghi's dovish comments. The dollar was up 0.1 percent at 104.085 yen adding to overnight gains of 0.5 percent. Sterling was flat at USD 1.2251, taking in stride comments by European Council President Donald Tusk that British Prime Minister Theresa May had confirmed that Brexit talks would be triggered by end-March 2017. US crude futures were down 0.1 percent at USD 50.58 a barrel. The contract lost more than 2 percent on Thursday as the dollar's surge prompted profit-taking on a rally that sent US crude to 15-month highs midweek.

US stocks ended a choppy session on Thursday with a slight decline as investors digested the latest round of earnings, with a sharp drop in telecoms offset by gains in healthcare. Telecoms were down 2 percent, their biggest percentage decline in five weeks, as Verizon lost 2.5 percent. The company added fewer than expected wireless subscribers in the third quarter and revenue fell short of expectations. The sector was also pressured late in the session as AT&T extended earlier losses after a report the company had discussed the idea of a merger with Time Warner during recent meetings. AT&T shares ended down 1.9 percent while Time Warner advanced 4.7 percent. But a 10.3 percent jump in American Express helped offset the decline after the credit card issuer posted strong quarterly results and boosted its 2016 forecast. The gains gave the stock its best day in over seven years. "The fact is there is a lot of positive feelings, at least in the short term, because the earnings season is going so well, the financials particularly," said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago. "That being said, this is on really low expectations." Despite the big gain in AmEx shares, the financial sector closed down slightly, off 0.02 percent as property and casualty insurer Travelers dropped 6.1 percent after reporting a steep drop in profit. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 40.27 points, or 0.22 percent, to 18,162.35, the S&P 500 lost 2.95 points, or 0.14 percent, to 2,141.34 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 4.58 points, or 0.09 percent, to 5,241.83. The S&P 500 has struggled in recent sessions to climb above its technical resistance level at the 100-day moving average, which currently stands at 2,142.60. The level had acted as support for the index until it broke below it last week. Healthcare , up 0.5 percent, was the sole major sector in positive territory, led by a 3.9 percent climb in Danaher after its quarterly results. After the closing bell, Microsoft Corp shares jumped 5.9 percent after the software giant announced its quarterly results, while shares of Advanced Micro Devices fell 4.6 percent following its results. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.37-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.16-to-1 ratio favored decliners. The S&P 500 posted 6 new 52-week highs and 4 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 57 new highs and 59 new lows. About 6.19 billion shares changed hands in US exchanges, compared with the 6.42 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap up opening on Thursday tracking a positive trend across markets in Asia and a strong finish at Wall Street overnight as a rally in crude oil prices to near a 15-month high following a surprise drop in US storage levels last week bolstered risk taking appetite. The focus was also on the final US Presidential debate currently underway with Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton going face to face with Republican candidate Donald Trump. A clear win for Clinton in the November election is expected to be a good omen for markets worldwide. Traders will keep a close eye on any clarity issued by the two US Presidential hopefuls on the subject of economic policy. Asian stocks were higher as traders eyed the outcome of the final presidential debate between Trump and Clinton. Hopes that the European Central Bank which meets today for an interest rate decision may offer some cues over a possible extension to its bond buying program also supported sentiment. Shanghai Composite was tad higher amid signs of stabilization in China’s economic slowdown. Hang Seng rose impressively and Nikkei 225 surged by over 1 per cent as rising oil prices boosted oil explorers while exporter stocks climbed amid a weaker yen. US stocks rose on Wednesday as a rally in crude prices bolstered shares of energy producers while better-than-expected earnings lifted bank shares. On the economic front, US housing data disappointed as starts fell 9 per cent to a 1.05 million annualized rate in September.

Asian stocks advanced on Thursday, propelled by strong US earnings and oil prices near a 15-month high, as the third and final US presidential debate before the November 8 election got underway.

Asian stocks advanced on Thursday, propelled by strong US earnings and oil prices near a 15-month high, as the third and final US presidential debate before the Nov. 8 election got underway. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.25 percent. Japan's Nikkei extended gains to 0.9 percent. China's CSI 300 increased 0.2 percent, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index climbed 0.6 percent. In the final debate between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, which began at 0100 GMT, the former is trying to reverse the momentum in an election that polls show is tilting away from him. Trump has been damaged recently by several accusations of groping women - which he denies - and concerns about his claims that the election will be rigged against him. "One of the six topics is the US economy, and any clarification of policy in this area could influence trading," Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney, wrote in a note. "Secondly, a clear win for either candidate is important. Markets are likely to buy Clinton and sell Trump." The Mexican peso inched down against the dollar on Thursday during the debate, slightly shrinking this week's gains. The U.S. dollar rose 0.2 percent to 18.548 peso on Thursday, but remains down 2.4 percent this week. With Trump's criticism of Mexican migration and trade putting the US's southern neighbour at a disadvantage if he wins, a stronger Mexican peso reflects market perceptions of a lower chance of a Trump win. Overnight, the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.2 percent, after Morgan Stanley posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit to round out a string of solid results from big US banks. With 70 companies in the S&P 500 having reported earnings through Wednesday morning, 80 percent have topped earnings expectations. Third quarter earnings are now expected to increase 0.5 percent, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, which would be the first quarter of growth in five. "We're up because the (earnings) numbers are so great, the forward guidance is great and the banks just knocked it out of the park," said Ken Polcari, Director of the NYSE floor division at O'Neil Securities in New York. Energy shares also contributed to the gains on Wall Street, as oil prices jumped after a surprisingly large inventory drop of 5.2 million barrels, compared with a forecast for a 2.7-million barrel build. It was the sixth week of declines in seven weeks. U.S. crude slipped 0.3 percent to USD51.44 on Thursday, after surging 2.6 percent to close at USD51.60 in the previous session. It earlier touched USD51.93, the highest since July 2015. Brent crude was little changed at USD52.64 on Thursday, after climbing 1.9 percent on Wednesday. The dollar rose 0.15 percent to 103.62 yen on Thursday after falling 0.4 percent on Wednesday. The euro was flat at USD1.0974, ahead of the European Central Bank's policy meeting on Thursday. Investors are focused on whether ECB President Mario Draghi will give any indications that the central bank will begin tapering its bond purchase program when it meets on Thursday.

Indian equity benchmarks are set to witness a gap up opening on Wednesday tracking a bullish trend across most markets in Asia and a positive finish at Wall Street overnight as signs of stabilization in the Chinese economy and strong US corporate earnings indicated an improving global outlook, bolstering risk taking appetite. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,682.5, up by 14.5 points or 0.17 per cent at 10:28 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open higher today. Shares of NIIT, Hindustan Zinc and Tata Coffee will be in focus as these companies reveal their September quarter earnings. Optimism over the Indian economy amid swift progress on the implementation of GST and firm growth focus by the RBI may also buoy sentiment. Minutes from the RBI’s first ever monetary policy committee meeting released on Tuesday showed that concerns over growth took precedence over inflation which has softened lately, leaving room for monetary easing. Meanwhile, the GST Council has reached an agreement over a formula to compensate states for any loss of revenue owing to the new system. The contentious issue of tax rates is next on the agenda. On Tuesday, the 30-share Sensex rallied by a whopping 520.91 points or by 1.89 per cent to end at 28,050.88 driven by a firm global trend, advance in financial shares and GST progress.

Most Asian stocks rose as China’s economy was stable in the September quarter, while oil prices rallied. China’s Q3 GDP growth came in at 6.7 per cent, matching forecasts. Shanghai Composite rose, Hang Seng declined while Nikkei 225 was higher amid speculation that the US Fed may adopt a gradual pace of policy tightening. Robust Q3 earnings from the likes of Goldman Sachs and Netflix, coupled with improving US inflation boosted Wall Street on Tuesday. Consumer prices in the US rose at the fastest pace in five months, up 0.3 per cent in September 2016 from the previous month, a sign that inflation may be reaching near the Fed’s goal.

Australian shares firmed 0.4 percent, while Japan's Nikkei dithered either side of flat.

Asian shares inched ahead on Wednesday after Wall Street got a lift from encouraging corporate earnings and investors wagered an imminent barrage of Chinese data would confirm the economy had at least stabilised. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.4 percent, on top of a jump of 1.4 percent on Tuesday. Australian shares firmed 0.4 percent, while Japan's Nikkei dithered either side of flat. All eyes were on the Chinese gross domestic product (GDP) report due at 0200 GMT. While there are some doubts about the reliability of the data, markets tend to take them on face value. The economy is forecast to have expanded by 6.7 percent in the third quarter from the year earlier, underpinned by government stimulus and a hot property market. Other data due is expected to show a slight pick-up in retail sales, industrial output and urban investment. "We view a consensus GDP print as the most market-friendly outcome with a downside miss likely to trigger hard-landing worries and an upside surprise, overheating/leverage worries," wrote analysts at ING in a note. "The Shanghai Composite has climbed the wall of worry since February and we remain of the view that it will be among the top performing Asian stock markets in the final months of the year." On Wall Street, the Dow ended Tuesday up 0.42 percent, while the S&P 500 added 0.62 percent and the Nasdaq 0.85 percent. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 1.5 percent to its highest level in nearly a week. Of the 52 S&P 500 companies that have reported results to date for the third quarter, 81 percent had earnings that topped average analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. One company seemingly disappointing investors was Intel , which slid 5.4 percent after the bell despite beating expectations on its earnings. Pound up amid Brexit confusion A report on U.S. consumer prices showed underlying inflation moderated slightly in September to 2.2 percent, leading the market to slightly pare back bets on a December rate hike. Fed fund futures imply around a 65 percent probability of a move, down from 70 percent. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said last week the US central bank could allow inflation to run above its target. US Treasury yields dipped, in line with their UK counterparts, amid confusion on whether parliament will have to ratify Britain's exit from the European Union. British lawmakers are seen as less inclined to take a hard line on Brexit than Prime Minister Theresa May. The news headlines caught the market very short of sterling and left the pound up at USD 1.2295, after a rally of 1 percent on Tuesday. The dollar was steady on the yen at 103.77, after edging back from 104.20 the previous session. Against a basket of currencies it was off 0.1 percent at 97.777 . The euro remained vulnerable at USD 1.0990 ahead of Thursday's meeting of the European Central Bank where some investors wager President Mario Draghi will push back against talk of a tapering in its asset buying. In commodity markets, oil prices extended gains as an industry group's data showed an unexpected draw in US crude inventories last week. Brent crude was quoted 64 cents higher at USD 52.32 a barrel, while US crude added 63 cents to USD 50.92.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75.54 points, or 0.42 percent, to 18,161.94, the S&P 500 gained 13.1 points, or 0.62 percent, to 2,139.6 and the Nasdaq Composite added 44.01 points, or 0.85 percent, to 5,243.84

Wall Street advanced on Tuesday to give the S&P 500 its best day this month on the heels of solid earnings reports from names such as UnitedHealth and Netflix that put corporate profits on track to snap a four-quarter streak of declines. Of the 52 S&P 500 companies that have reported results to date for the third quarter, 81 percent have reported earnings that topped average analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Third-quarter earnings are now expected to show growth of 0.2 percent, which would mark an end to the US profit recession that began in the third quarter of 2015. If the quarter stays on track, it will be the first time since the fourth-quarter of 2014 in which both earnings and revenue of S&P 500 companies increased. "We had some decent earnings results," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago. "Given companies' track record of beating expectations, investors believe this will be the first quarter in five where we have positive earnings growth." The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75.54 points, or 0.42 percent, to 18,161.94, the S&P 500 gained 13.1 points, or 0.62 percent, to 2,139.6 and the Nasdaq Composite added 44.01 points, or 0.85 percent, to 5,243.84. Gains were broad, with each of the 11 major S&P sectors in positive territory, led by a 1.1 percent gain in healthcare , boosted by a UnitedHealth's 6.9 percent jump after quarterly results and forecast. Gains in the sector were curbed by a 2.6-percent decline in Johnson & Johnson , while Pfizer gained 0.6 percent on plans to ship a cheaper biosimilar to Remicade, JNJ's top selling product. The news overshadowed J&J's slight earnings beat. Netflix was the biggest advancer on the S&P 500, rising more than 19 percent after posting quarterly results and much higher-than-expected subscriber growth. Goldman Sachs rose 2.2 percent after the bank's results blew past Wall Street estimates, mirroring the performance of its Wall Street peers and helping lift the NYSE Arca Broker/Dealers index 1.1 percent. Among the decliners, IBM , fell 2.6 percent after reporting its 18th straight quarter of revenue decline. Intel , rose 1.5 percent during the session on a Barclays upgrade, but shares fell 3.3 percent after the close following the chipmaker's results. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 3.24-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.81-to-1 ratio favoured advancers. The S&P 500 posted 4 new 52-week highs and 3 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 47 new highs and 60 new lows. About 5.6 billion shares changed hands in US exchanges, below the 6.52 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap up opening on Tuesday tracking a positive trend across markets in Asia as mixed US economic data eased fears over an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate hike, bolstering risk taking appetite. Slow and steady pace of US policy tightening may ensure continued capital flows into emerging markets such as India. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,561, up by 29.5 points or 0.34 per cent at 10:26 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open on a positive note today. Shares of Havells India, Mastek and Hindustan Zinc will be in focus as the companies reveal their September quarter earnings. The Q2 earnings season has been off to a rather tepid start with IT bellwethers Infosys and TCS disappointing. Meanwhile, softening inflation has opened the door for further policy easing by the RBI in the coming months while a rebound in exports in September also augurs well for Asia’s third biggest economy. The 30-share Sensex on Monday tanked 143.63 points or by 0.52 per cent to close at the lowest level in more than three months at 27,529.97 as sluggish corporate earnings and weakness in global equities following Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s comments that US economic potential is slipping weighed heavily on sentiment.

Hopes that US monetary policy will continue to remain accommodative boosted Asian stocks. While US factory output rose for the third time in four months, up 0.2 per cent in September from the previous month, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s manufacturing gauge succumbed to contraction in October, signalling a mixed outlook for the world’s biggest economy. Meanwhile, Fed’s vice chairman Stanley Fisher said that the central bank may have reached its limits as far as pursuing a strategy to push unemployment even lower was concerned. Shanghai Composite rose ahead of Wednesday’s GDP, industrial output and retail sales data. Hang Seng surged over 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 was tad higher led by gains in developers. US stocks fell on Monday as investors assessed mixed US economic data and quarterly earnings from the likes of Bank of America.

Oil prices rose early on Tuesday as some analysts said markets might not be quite as oversupplied as suggested by many, with global inventories rising less than expected ahead of the high-demand winter heating season in the northern hemisphere. A drop in the dollar away from seven-month highs the previous day also supported crude, as a lower greenback makes fuel purchases cheaper for countries using other currencies domestically. Brent crude futures were trading at USD 51.77 per barrel at 0035 GMT, up 25 cents from their previous close. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up 27 cents at USD 50.21 a barrel. Traders said prices were receiving support from the notion that oil markets, which have been dogged by oversupply for two years, may be closer to balance than previously anticipated. Beyond estimating production and consumption, one way to gauge the supply and demand balance is to analyse fuel inventory changes. "Global oil inventories (industry and government) increased by 17 million barrels to 5.618 billion barrels in 3Q16. This is the smallest build since 4Q14, confirming that inventory builds are slowing as the market comes back into balance," Bernstein Energy said in a note on Tuesday. "Global Inventory builds estimated in 3Q16 imply 200 million barrels per day oversupply, which is smaller than IEA estimates of 300 million barrels per day," Bernstein added. Bernstein said that recent inventory declines "suggest that oil markets may be closer to re-balancing than some expect," but added that going forward "much depends on how much OPEC is prepared to cut at the upcoming meetings in Vienna at the end of November". The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will meet on Nov. 30 to discuss a planned output cut of around 1 million barrels per day away from its record 33.6 million bpd production in September . The cartel hopes that major non-OPEC producer Russia will cooperate. Some analysts said it was difficult to gauge how deep a production cut would need to be in order to bring production into balance with consumption, especially as available data was unreliable. "Many questions remain about what exactly is required to balance the market, and Iraq's insistence that the secondary source data used by OPEC to estimate its own production is wrong is both an additional problem for the organisation to navigate, but also highlights the bigger issue of data inadequacies in the oil market,"

Asian stocks edged higher and the dollar consolidated recent gains on Tuesday though risk appetite was low as weak US markets prompted investors to stay on the sidelines. In Asia, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.2 percent in early trade. Australia's benchmark index was up 0.3 percent. As campaigning for the US presidential elections enters its home stretch and concerns about the Chinese economy deepen after weak trade data last week, risk aversion is broadly on the rise forcing investors to cut positions after a strong rally in risky assets in the third quarter of 2016. Daily portfolio flows to emerging markets declined sharply last week with the seven-day moving average declining to its lowest level since a surprise Chinese currency devaluation in August 2015, according to flows data from Institute of International Finance. An index measuring broad market volatility and risk appetite was trading above 16, adding to recent gains. A market volatility gauge for Hong Kong stocks was flirting with the 20 level. Adding to the headwinds for emerging markets is the growing likelihood of a U.S. rate increase in December which has lifted 10-year U.S. treasury yields up by 25 basis points so far this month and boosted the dollar. "Despite the 'lower for longer' rhetoric, the expected case for a December rate hike remains on course, yet given the division in the FOMC it is far from done," said Stephen Innes, a senior trader at FX broker OANDA, referring to the US central bank's Federal Open Market Committee. Stocks moved lower after comments from Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer, who said economic stability could be threatened by low interest rates, but it was "not that simple" for the Fed to raise rates. Wall Street ended lower as lower oil prices weighed on energy shares. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.29 percent, to 18,086.4, the S&P 500 slipped 0.3 percent to 2,126.5 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.27 percent, to 5,199.82. In forex markets, major currencies were confined in broad trading ranges on the back of soggy US data and the absence of fresh triggers. The dollar edged slightly lower against a basket of currencies after hitting a seven-month high in the previous session. The yen bounced around near 104 to the dollar. Oil prices were broadly steady, as oversupply concerns with a spike in trade volume kept U.S prices below USD50 a barrel, but losses were limited amid a projected drop in American shale output. International benchmark Brent crude was up 0.4 percent while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) edged 0.3 percent higher. Safe-haven gold was firm around the USD1250 per ounce level as growing risk aversion encouraged buyers, halting a 6 percent fall over the last few weeks.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 51.98 points, or 0.29 percent, to 18,086.4, the S&P 500 lost 6.48 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,126.5 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 14.34 points, or 0.27 percent, to 5,199.82.

Wall Street ended modestly lower on Monday as energy stocks retreated along with oil prices, while Amazon and Netflix weighed on the consumer discretionary sector. Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer warned that economic stability could be threatened by low interest rates and noted the central bank is "very close" to its employment and inflation targets, but said it was "not that simple" for the Fed to raise rates. The comments from Fischer, a dove who has supported a rate hike, come as other Fed officials have recently said the current state of affairs may be about as good as it gets. Conflicting statements on the timing of a rate hike from some Fed officials has been adding to uncertainty in markets, which have been grappling with changing dynamics in a tumultuous US presidential election and nervousness regarding third-quarter earnings. "Fischer’s stature is second only to Janet Yellen so when he speaks, people are going to pay closer attention to what he is saying," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities in New York. "To me, it is different slices of the same apple - we’ve got a Fed that desperately wants to raise rates one more time this year and that probably happens in December." Energy stocks were 0.6 percent lower as US oil prices settled down 0.8 percent at USD 49.94 while Brent crude settled down 0.8 percent at USD 51.52 a barrel. Oil prices were weighed down by oversupply concerns, although losses were curbed amid a projected drop in American shale output. Investors are looking for corporate profits to turn a corner in the third-quarter after a string of declines. With 7 percent of S&P 500 companies having reported through Monday morning, expectations are for a decline of 0.1 percent for the quarter, an improvement from the 0.5 percent decline expected on October 1, according to Thomson Reuters data. Bank of America Corp shares edged up 0.3 percent as its profit rose for the first time in three quarters and topped estimates. Netflix Inc fell 1.6 percent ahead of its expected quarterly results, while Amazon.com Inc lost 1.2 percent, for its third straight decline, which pulled the consumer discretionary sector 0.8 percent lower. After the close, shares of the subscription video service surged about 20 percent in the wake of its results. Hasbro Inc , was a bright spot among discretionary stocks during the session, surging 7.4 percent after the toymaker's better-than-expected quarterly report. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.51-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.48-to-1 ratio favoured decliners. The S&P 500 posted no new 52-week highs and 7 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 24 new highs and 89 new lows. About 5.15 billion shares changed hands in US exchanges, below the 6.54 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap down opening on Monday tracking negative cues from most markets across Asia as bets that the US Federal Reserve is moving closer to tightening interest rates curbs risk taking appetite. Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Friday reiterated her call for gradual rate hikes as robust retail sales data upped the odds of December tightening. Losses in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,564, down by 47 points or 0.55 per cent at 10:14 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open lower today. The focus this week would be on the September quarter earnings from RIL, Wipro, UltraTech Cement, ACC, Hindustan Zinc, HCL Technologies and Cairn India. The quarterly earnings season has been off to a disappointing start with IT bellwether Infosys being punished for cutting its revenue guidance while TCS disappointed on the revenue front, signalling an uncertain outlook for the country’s IT industry. However, hopes of further policy easing by the RBI in the coming months amid softening inflation may support sentiment at Dalal Street. While consumer inflation hit a 13-month low in September, wholesale inflation eased to 3.57 per cent from 3.74 per cent in August 2016. All eyes on the global front will be on the US presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on Wednesday. Movement of the rupee against the dollar, foreign investment trend and crude oil prices will also dictate market direction this week. Last week, the 30-share Sensex fell 387.54 points, or 1.38 per cent to end at 27,673.6 as Fed rate hike fears weighed heavily.

Most Asian stocks fell as traders feared a Fed rate hike in the near-term after US retail sales data signaled strength in the world’s biggest economy. Retail sales in the US rose at the quickest pace in three months in September 2016, up 0.6 per cent from the previous month. Shanghai Composite was trading with slim gains, Hang Seng shed almost 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 was tad lower but a weaker yen bolstered the appeal of exporter stocks, supporting sentiment. US stocks closed in the green on Friday helped by better-than-expected earnings from the likes of JP Morgan and Citigroup while worries over a Fed rate hike kept a lid on gains. Asian shares dipped on Monday while the dollar held firm near seven-month high against a basket of major currencies after comments from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen boosted long-dated US bond yields. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dipped 0.2 percent in early trade while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.2 percent. "Yellen's remarks are likely to lift Japanese bond yields too, which should support financial shares. The Nikkei is likely to be supported by a weak yen as well on the whole," said Masahiro Ichikawa, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management. Yellen said on Friday the Fed may need to run a "high-pressure" economy in order to reverse damage from the global financial crisis that depressed output. Her remarks were not addressing immediate policy concerns directly and did not change prevailing view that the Fed is likely to raise interest rates in December. Yet speculation that she may prefer to keep easy monetary policy stance for a long time even if inflation exceeds its 2 percent target pushed up long-dated U.S. bonds, with the 30-year bond yield hitting a four-month high of 2.565 percent. As higher US bond yields could attract more foreign investors, they helped the dollar post its largest weekly rise against a basket of six major currencies in more than seven months last week. The dollar index, which rose 1.4 percent last week, hit a seven-month high of 98.158 in early Monday and last stood at 98.115. The euro slipped to 2 1/2-month low of USD 1.0967 early on Monday while the yen traded at 104.25 per dollar, near its 2 1/2-month low of 104.635 touched last Thursday. There is a reason for investors to be concerned about inflation. Inflation expectations in the US have been rising in the past few weeks in part due to rising oil prices. A gauge of investors' inflation expectations, the breakeven inflation rate based on inflation-linked bonds, rose to its highest level in about five months. Oil prices logged their fourth straight week of gains last week, extending their advance since the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries announced last month its first planned output cut in eight years. US crude futures CLc1 traded at USD 50.01 per barrel in early Monday trade, down 0.7 percent from last week. Brent crude futures LCOc1 stood at USD 51.71 per barrel, down 0.5 percent. China also reported higher than-expected inflation in September for consumers and producers alike, with producer prices rising for the first time since January 2012. Chinese economic data due on Wednesday, including July-Sept GDP, will be a key focus of this week. China's economy likely grew 6.7 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, the same pace as in the previous quarter, as increased government spending and a property boom offset stubbornly weak exports, according to a Reuters poll of 58 economists. But the expected rate of expansion in the third quarter would still be near the weakest since the global crisis, and analysts are increasingly worried that growth is becoming too reliant on government spending and a housing market that is showing signs of overheating.

Corporate earnings, economic reports and Fed speakers could all challenge markets in the week ahead, but traders will be on guard for the latest catalyst — the potential bombshells coming from the presidential election.

Corporate earnings, economic reports and Fed speakers could all challenge markets in the week ahead, but traders will be on guard for the latest catalyst — the potential bombshells coming from the presidential election. Earnings are expected from about 80 S&P companies, including Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, McDonald's and American Express. According to Thomson Reuters, earnings for the S&P 500 companies are expected to be nearly flat for the third quarter — down just 0.4 percent after a year of negative earnings reports. Data in the coming week includes industrial production Monday, the Fed's beige book on Wednesday, but most importantly CPI consumer inflation data on Tuesday, after producer prices perked up more than expected in September. Stocks in the past week were lower, with the S&P 500 down nearly 1 percent at 2,132, the Dow down 0.6 percent at 18.138, and the Nasdaq off 1.5 percent at 5,214. In the past week, the market became vulnerable for the first time to the idea that Donald Trump's controversial behavior and sparring with Republicans could hurt GOP Congressional candidates. While traders give it low odds, there was speculation in the past week that Democrat Hillary Clinton could sweep in with Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. The conventional thinking is that Clinton will win and Republicans will hold one if not two houses. Markets prefer gridlock over one party control, especially Democratic control since they are viewed as more likely to adopt stiffer regulations and less favorable tax policy. Trump has fallen in the polls since the revelation of a tape where he was making lewd and aggressive remarks about women. The final presidential debate is scheduled for Wednesday night. "If Clinton looks like she's going to win, the market likes it. If Clinton's party looks like it wins, the market doesn't like it. That's one of the oddities we've got going," said James Paulsen, CIO for Wells Capital Management. "The election will create volatility short-term but I don't think it will matter over the next year, unless one party gets triple power." Stocks should respond to earnings in the week ahead. Major banks reported profits Friday, and earnings for JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and PNC came in above expectations. "I think we're going to see earnings momentum," said Paulsen, adding it's likely earnings comparisons will be positive for the first time in five quarters. He also expects to see global economic growth pick up. "I think that's coming together. … I'm not saying rapid growth, but just enough that shows we turned the corner in the global recovery, and that would be just at a time when earnings are coming through." Paulsen said if earnings and the economy do pick up, so should stocks. "I think we're breaking north. It's our next big move. It might have to be after the election," he said. Fed speakers will also be of interest in the coming week, after traders took comments from Fed Chair Janet Yellen Friday to suggest she would like to hold rates low for even longer. Yellen said there could be benefits to a "high-pressure economy," which was taken to mean the Fed could hold off on rate hikes, and let inflation pickup to stimulate the economy. The market is anticipating a December rate hike, particularly after the Fed's minutes from its September meeting showed a divided Fed with a number of members eager to raise rates. After Yellen's dovish comments Friday, New York Fed President William Dudleyswung the market's view another way when he told The Wall Street Journal that he expects a rate hike this year. He also said the 10-year Treasury yield seems low and was not reflecting the economy's pace of growth, The 10-year yield rose after his late afternoon remarks, ending the week near 1.80 percent, a level it reached this past week for the first time since early June. Dudley will speak again in the coming week, but Fed Vice Chair Stanley Fischer also speaks, at the Economic Club of New York on Monday. Fischer, along with Dudley and Yellen, is seen as a critical member at the dovish core of the Fed. "Any views around inflation risks will be important to see how comfortable these core members feel about a near term hike," said Emanuella Enenajor, senior North America economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Enenajor said Yellen was misunderstood Friday. "I don't think she was sending the signal the markets interpreted," she said. "She's not suggesting that as a potential policy course. … She mentioned it as an academic question." Even aside from Fed speakers, inflation will be an important topic, with CPI Tuesday. "We're looking for 0.3 percent headline. Core up 0.1 percent. We had a strong reading of 0.3 last month. The health care piece was unusually strong. There's a couple of places where we could have a reversal, some payback. That's why we're in the camp of 0.1 on core," said Enenajor. She expects CPI inflation at a 1.5 percent year over year pace in September. Inflation is one of the Fed's two mandates, and it has targeted a 2 percent level. The Fed's favorite inflation measure is the PCE deflator, running at about 1.7 percent, but the Consumer Price Index shows core inflation has been running above 2 percent, even if headline inflation is lower. Enenajor said by the time November CPI is reported, the headline number could be 2 percent just based on the fact that oil prices were so low last year. "The big push from oil comes in February. We think it could get to a high 2 percent. It's temporary but it's confirmation that a lot of the weakness we had in inflation was driven by energy," she said. Besides the Fed, the European Central Bank will be of interest. It holds a rates meeting Thursday and ECB President Mario Draghi speaks after the meeting. Also in the coming week, CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report" is celebrating its five-year anniversary, featuring an all-star lineup with some of the biggest names in investing. At noon on Monday, David Tepper, Carl Icahn and Jeffrey Gundlach join the show. Other guests during the week include Marc Lasry, Nelson Peltz and Jim Chanos.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a bullish opening on Friday as easing inflation bolsters the case for further interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of India, boosting risk taking appetite. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,600, up by 24 points or 0.28 per cent at 10:22 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may have a gap up opening today. Retail inflation fell sharply for the second month on the trot, coming in at 4.31 per cent in September 2016, a 13-month low, from 5.05 per cent in August 2016 as food inflation declined sharply. With the RBI’s 5 per cent consumer inflation target for March 2017 looking likely to be met, another rate cut in the near-term could be in the offing. Shares of TCS may witness some upward momentum as the country’s largest IT software exporter on Thursday in after-market hours posted better-than-expected Q2 earnings. The company reported a 4.5 per cent sequential rise in net profit at Rs 6,603 crore in the September 2016 quarter. All eyes will be on Infosys which will unveil its Q2 report card. Analysts expect Infosys to post a 1.8 per cent sequential growth in net profit at RS 3,500 crore in Q2 FY 2016-17. Bajaj Corp, CRISIL and DCB Bank will also report their September quarter earnings. Unnerved by fears over an imminent Fed rate hike and weakness in Chinese exports, the 30-share Sensex closed at a three-month low on Thursday, plunging 439.23 points or by 1.56 per cent to end at 27,643.11.

Most Asian stocks advanced after positive China inflation data signaled some strength in the world’s second biggest economy. China’s factory gate prices rose for the first time since 2012, up 0.1 per cent in September 2016 from a year earlier while consumer price inflation at 1.9 per cent beat estimates, accelerating from August’s 1.3 per cent. However, Shanghai Composite was down despite the positive inflation data, Hang Seng rose and Nikkei 225 logged slim gains with oil explorers and insurers showing strength. US stocks fell on Thursday amid worries that sagging global growth may weigh on the US economy when the Fed is all set to begin tightening monetary policy.

Asian stocks edged higher and the dollar bounced on Friday as global markets took a breather after being churned by downbeat Chinese economic data the previous day. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.2 percent in early trade after dropping 1.1 percent on Thursday. It was headed for a loss of 2.3 percent on the week. Japan's Nikkei inched up 0.1 percent and was on track for a 0.3 percent weekly loss. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.6 percent and Australian stocks was up 0.1 percent. Overnight, the Dow fell 0.3 percent and Nasdaq shed 0.5 percent, led by falls in financial shares and weak Chinese trade numbers, although a late-day rebound in crude oil limited the decline. China's exports fell 10 percent year-on-year in September, worse than expected, while imports unexpectedly shrank, reviving concerns about the health of the world's second-biggest economy. "China's struggle to achieve export growth is a reflection of weak global trade. This won't prevent the Fed from increasing interest rates this year. However, it will be a handbrake on the pace of monetary tightening next year," wrote Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets. China will report inflation data later on Friday morning. The dollar index, which had risen to a seven-week high against earlier midweek on reinforced prospects of a December interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, nudged up 0.1 percent to 97.640 . The dollar index had risen to 98.129 on Wednesday, its highest since March 10, shored up by a rise in US Treasury yields to four-month peaks as the debt market pondered a tightening by the Fed towards the year's end. The greenback gained 0.1 percent to 103.800 yen. It had advanced to a 2-1/2-month peak of 104.635 on Thursday before sliding to 103.340 after the Chinese trade data. It was on track to gain 0.8 percent against its Japanese peer on the week. The euro slipped 0.1 percent to USD 1.1044 after pulling back from a 2-1/2-month low of USD 1.0985 on Thursday on the back of the dollar's broad retreat. The common currency was en route for a 1.4 percent weekly loss. Investors will have their latest chance to gauge whether the world's biggest economy is ready for tighter monetary policy through US indicators due later including September retail sales and the University of Michigan consumer sentiment report. The markets will also tune into speeches by Fed Chair Janet Yellen and Boston Federal Reserve President Eric Rosengren for hints about the timing of the next interest rate hike. Elsewhere in currencies, the pound dipped 0.2 percent to USD 1.2226 . It was on track to lose 1.7 percent this week. Sterling kept well above the 31-year trough below USD 1.1500 struck last Friday during its flash crash as some fears of a "hard Brexit" ebbed, it remained under pressure as the road to Britain's exit from the European Union was seen to be strewn with obstacles. The Singapore dollar firmed as the central bank held policy steady, as expected, despite a surprise contraction in preliminary third-quarter GDP. Investors were waiting for the opening of Thailand's financial markets after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday. The prime minister urged vigilance on security in a televised address and also asked businesses to keep investing and stock market traders to maintain their holdings and not "dump" shares. Crude oil extended gains after bouncing overnight on a US government report showing hefty draws in diesel and gasoline. US crude was up 0.4 percent at USD 50.62 a barrel , having gained 1.5 percent so far this week.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a bearish opening on Thursday, after a two-day trading holiday, as negative cues from most markets in Asia amid speculation of a near-term US Federal Reserve interest rate hike curbed risk taking appetite. Losses in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,678, down by 26 points or 0.30 per cent at 10:40 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open lower today. FOMC minutes released on Wednesday showed that several policymakers called for rate tightening “relatively soon” with improved economic data and fears over an acceleration in inflation also bolstering the case to raise borrowing costs. Traders will react to the August IIP data released in after-market hours on Monday. India’s factory output shrank for a second straight month, falling 0.7 per cent, year-on-year in August 2016 amid contractions in mining and manufacturing and a steep plunge in capital goods output, signalling underlying weakness in Asia’s third biggest economy. The focus today will be on the September consumer inflation data to be released in after-market hours, and which may offer further cues over policy easing by the RBI in the coming months. Analysts expect retail inflation to hit a one-year low of 4.8 per cent in September 2016 from August’s 5.05 per cent. All eyes will also be fixated on TCS as the country’s biggest software exporter reports its September quarter earnings. TCS may report a sequential drop of 0.9 per cent in its net profit to Rs 6260 crore in Q2 FY17. The 30-share Sensex snapped a three-day drop on Monday, ending up by 21.2 points or by 0.08 per cent to 28082.34 ahead of key macro data.

Most Asian stocks fell as a stronger greenback hit commodity producers while the Fed indicated that a rate hike was probably imminent. Shanghai Composite was trading tad higher even as China’s exports fell the most in seven months, down 10 per cent in September 2016 from a year ago. Hang Seng tanked over 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 fell despite a weaker yen. US stocks ended mostly higher on Wednesday as the Fed indicated that it may undertake interest rate tightening soon but maintain a gradual approach to further rate hikes.
